Veterinary Product Import Service

Did you know that we provide a special import service for products outside of the UK? Find out more by reading below.

Why would I need to import medicines to my practice?

On some occasions a medicine has to be imported into the UK from another country. There are a few reasons why you might need to do this such as :

  • There are no authorised veterinary products available in the UK at present.
  • There is a shortage of a particular UK authorised medicine.
  • You might need to import a human medicine for veterinary use.

Which medicines can I import into the UK?

You should be aware of the Veterinary Medicine Directorate (VMD) Product Information Database. This database lists all of the veterinary medicines that are authorised for use in the United Kingdom along with a link to the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPCs) which stipulate the conditions of use for each product.

When you have confirmed that there isn’t a suitable UK authorised medicine, you are permitted as a vet to use your clinical judgement to treat patients under your care in accordance with the Prescribing Cascade.
