Chlorhexidine is an antimicrobial ingredient widely used in veterinary and healthcare environments to help control bacteria and other microorganisms. One of its useful characteristics is substantivity – its ability to bind to the skin and continue providing antimicrobial activity after application.
Traditionally, some chlorhexidine skin preparations have been formulated with alcohol. Alcohol provides rapid antimicrobial activity and dries quickly, making it useful for certain applications. However, it is the chlorhexidine itself that provides the characteristic residual activity associated with chlorhexidine-based products.
When Vet Way developed its new 4% Chlorhexidine Spray, the aim was therefore not simply to remove alcohol. It was to develop an alternative formulation built around chlorhexidine and the intended veterinary application.
Why develop an alternative?
Vet Way worked with veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and clinical boards to understand how these products are used and what veterinary teams need from them. This feedback was combined with the expertise of formulation chemists and technical specialists to develop a stable, ethanol-free formulation.
The finished product has also undergone relevant antimicrobial efficacy testing, providing evidence for the performance of the formulation itself.
Why has NVS chosen to support this new product?
NVS has chosen to make the product available to give veterinary practices an alternative to traditional alcohol-based chlorhexidine formulations.
Rather than relying on ethanol within the formulation, Vet Way developed an alternative combination of supporting formulation ingredients designed to complement the properties of chlorhexidine and create a stable, effective finished product.
