Microbiology – Laboratory Scientist

The role of Laboratory Scientist is focused on supporting the Department in striving for customer service excellence in internal and external activities. A Laboratory Scientist is responsible for providing a source of reporting, information, training, coaching, advice and support to the business and its colleagues. They should provide support the team in ensuring that all initiatives are fully implemented and that role model/ambassador behaviour, values and beliefs are adopted across the department. A Laboratory Scientist should be able to work well with minimal supervision, whilst also working effectively as a key team member to maximise the overall service delivered. A flexible ‘can do’ approach is essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample reception.
  • Preparation and analysis of microbiology samples including routine culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing, urinalysis and parasitology.
  • Use of Microbiology analysers including troubleshooting.
  • Use of the Matrix LIMS system and data entry.
  • Carryout Lab tests and review results based on appropriate experience level.
  • Maintenance and correct use of laboratory Equipment.
  • Preparation of reagents/media
  • General laboratory housekeeping.
  • Reception and ordering of stock and reagents.
  • Provide direct training and support to trainee Lab Scientists.
  • Testing of EQA and EQA scheme submission under minimal supervision.
  • Assist with method validation.
  • Environmental/temperature monitoring.
  • Adherence to written Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Controls, and Health & Safety rules
  • Identify own development needs
  • Works flexibly and collaboratively
  • Adopts role model behaviour, values and beliefs.
  • Plan own workload in association with Head of Dept.

Personal attributes: Qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge and competencies required to fulfil the role

  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A minimum of 1 year’s relevant experience.
  • Qualification in appropriate subject.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of the important elements of laboratory diagnostic testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Highly customer focused.
