Accounting Apprentice

Lewis joined NVS in September 2018 after initially studying a B-Tec in Music at college and being unsure with what his career options were. He had some experience of part-time retail roles and had never worked full time or in an office.

He is now studying his Level 2 Accountancy Apprenticeship and is part of our Finance Team. He is studying through Babington Business College in Stoke.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I am good at Maths and was interested in Accounting- I thought Apprenticeships seemed more accessible as a starting point.

Was it what you expected?

I didn’t really have any expectations because it is my first job in an office environment.

What valuable skills did you learn during your apprenticeship?

My communication skills have improved. I have also improved my skills on Excel and I can do more on it than I could before.

Do you think your apprenticeship is giving you a good foundation for a career in your chosen field?

Are you given opportunities to have an input into your daily duties and manage your own workload?

I have input – I am given tasks to do but I can prioritise them. I have to work to deadlines, for example month end. I can manage my own time and workload as long as I meet the deadlines that have been set.

Do you think it is manageable to balance working full time with a study schedule?

I do find it difficult sometimes, it depends on the work that has been set. But I get one day off work to allow me to go to college and on the weeks I don’t go to college my tutor comes to work and I spend the majority of the day studying one-to-one.

Do you think there is good support for apprentices in the workplace?

Yes, my tutor is always contactable and my team are really supportive.

Do you feel as though you are taken seriously in your role as an apprentice by your colleagues?

What advice would you give someone who isn’t sure if an apprenticeship is the right choice for them?

That is difficult, I wish I had known more about it when I was at school but there was no information available. I would say if anyone is choosing to do an apprenticeship straight away then make sure it is a subject they enjoy and are interested in.
